Long ago I held the opinion and belief that over-reliance on spell checkers and Grammar checkers would result in the inability to spell or use proper grammar.
I still hold that belief and I found someone as a prime example of why I do. This lady here got a corporate job and relied on her spell checker systems and app to spell, and obtained a bachelor’s degree. Disregard the flavor text of the person posting it;
The point is, our technology can help us, but if we are over reliant, then we may not learn for ourselves, which can create a gap in our own knowledge, preventing us from expressing our true selves as we have to course correct ourselves to the confines of the system.
People who use spell checkers are unlikely to invent new words or neologisms.
This is relevant to the story of the Tower of Babel. In which we relied on a technological tower in a sense, to communicate, and without the tower we would miscommunicate and speak in tongues or babble.
It’s a cautionary tale, and we ought to see what else in our world is a technological advancement that oversimplifies a core valuable function, what of our use of AI or Search Engines? Can people know that they can use their local library or talk to strangers or friends for information?
When’s the last time you looked for a lore master or information broker in person?
What other technology is outsourcing our ability to critically think or other possibly vital skills?
Epilogue
This is a cautionary tale, so be careful not to become over reliant on a crutch that may or may not exist.
Also, probably not the wisest move posting your inadequacies online, but I’m sure other people will judge for other reasons.
Anyhoot, I’m going from one angle and that angle is;
Words Mean Things
