Afghanistan and Pakistan are the land of the Afghani or land of the Paki.
Stan means Land.
So Disney Land could be translated to Disneystan, which is a common joke amongst Americans that have ‘toured’ the middle east.
“To stan” sounds like similar to Stand on, to be over in a sense. To reside from such lands.
In Sanscrit;
Sthāna (स्थान) refers to a “temple”, and in a broader sense represents “devotional place” or “residence of God”.
So Stan, Sthana, or land are all sort of the same.
It’s fun to think about, the translation of things. Language, how it’s related, evolves, and comes together again.
