Two types of ‘Utopia’

So there are two supposed origins of Utopia. That word is made in two parts, the first part ‘U-‘ and the second part ‘topia’

‘U-‘ + ‘-Topia’ = Utopia

The suffix ‘-Topia’ is about land, in ancient Hellenic it means ‘place’, think words like topography or topological.

The Prefix ‘U-‘ can stem from two origins.

One from the Prefix ‘Eu-‘ meaning good, thus a Eutopia is a ‘good place’ or ‘good land’.

Another origin for utopia can come from Greek Prefix ‘ou-‘ meaning ‘not’.

So Utopia, depending on which origin you subscribe to, can mean ‘Good Land’ or ‘Not Land’.

So if you’re trying to say the ‘good place’, then you should start using this spelling: “Eutopia”.

Because that would be more correct.

If you are trying to say ‘not land’, then you should use the spelling “Uotopia”. Perhaps we can say ‘isntland’ as a correction to ‘is-land’.

Because of the near similarity of the two, the linguistic ambiguity couples your idea of these two words into one. So when you think of Utopia, you’ll think of both ‘Not a Place’ and ‘Good Place’. This means you may subconsciously associate that Good Places are not real.

Which is silly, because if bad implies good then any existence of a dystopia means that a Eutopia does exist. It’s the natural conclusion of opposites.

As a side note,

Another word ‘dystopia’, the prefix ‘dys-‘ means ‘bad’. So a Dystopia translates to ‘Bad Place’.

Words are just that, things we smash together to make new ‘portmanteau’. Smashing words together makes compound words and the new result is different from the individual parts by themselves.

That’s all,
